Wyric woke to the distant, muffled sound of a Xylan victory chant echoing from somewhere deep in the bowels of the ship. His jaw clenched. Those dishonorable fuckers would soon be mourning their dead with a burial chant.

He shook his head and sat up, throwing off the lingering effects of the tranquilizer. He looked around and exhaled, rubbing his face with his claws. Then he stood on weak legs and walked to the energy bars of his cell. A prison cell, on a Xylan warship. A growl rumbled in his chest. This wasn’t a warship from the Imperial Military, but it had been bought from the same manufacturer, for civilian use. Wyric knew every detail about the ship and the specifics of its sale—he’d been the one to broker the purchase for the mafia.

Zaxon was across the way, pacing in his own cell.

Where’s Bex? Wyric questioned.

Zaxon lifted his chin. “He’s next to you,” he answered out loud.

“And the female?” Wyric asked. He raised his voice. “Trish?”

He heard a nearby shifting, and a sigh. “Yes?” she responded through the thick gray wall at his side. “I’m here too.”

At first, Wyric felt a rush of intense relief, happy to discover his brothers were alive and near, and the female was not only alive too, but awake and alert. Then he frowned. This weak response was not the usual reaction from his fierce Cyborg. He stood and gripped the bars of the cell. “Are you well?” he gritted, annoyed with his inability to visually confirm her condition.

He’d witnessed what they’d done to her, how Oaxan had pressed a hand-held remote, sending some sort of shock signal throughout Trish’s body, knocking her to the ground, writhing in pain. And there hadn’t been any way to stop this from happening. Wyric had been pinned underneath five massive enforcers, and Zaxon and Bex had been immediately tranq’d as they’d both raced to disarm Oaxan.

One moment Trish had been a warrior goddess, plowing through elite mafia enforcers like they were minor distractions in an otherwise glorious day, and the next she was incapacitated, her face and body a mask of pain so extreme as to cause madness. It was a disturbing visual he never again wanted to behold. He’d do whatever it took to keep that kind of agony away from this female, forever.

Wyric glanced at the guard posted at the doorway to the brig. It didn’t matter if the male overheard their conversations, they were probably being monitored anyway. Let Oaxan listen to their plans, it wouldn’t change the outcome—Wyric was going to kill him. Familial bonds would not get in the way this time. Last time he’d paused at the crucial moment and was now paying the price. This time he would not hesitate.

“Physically? Yes, I’m fine,” she answered in a husky voice. “But mentally? No. I am not well. My emotion chip is wreaking havoc on my mind and body.”

He clenched his jaw. “We will escape,” he promised. He’d escaped before; he would do so again.
